INTRODUCTION

The West of Scotland School of Anaesthesia is located in Glasgow and the surrounding area. The school provides structured training in anaesthesia, commencing at novice Senior House Officer and progressing through Specialist Registrar to Certification of completion of specialist training required to practice as a Consultant.

Training is highly structured and regulated to a national standard set by the Royal College of Anaesthetists. Each department of anaesthesia has one or more College Tutors responsible for training. The Tutors are in turn responsible to the Regional Educational Advisor via his deputies.

There are a total of 68 Specialist Registrar posts and Senior House Officer posts in the school of anaesthesia. In addition, there are subspecialty posts in Critical Care, Paediatrics, Pain, Neuroanaesthesia and transfer of the critically ill.

Socially, Glasgow is a large and vibrant city providing a wide variety of entertainment and lifestyles. The West of Scotland is an area of outstanding natural beauty with easy access to the coast, lochs and mountains. There are a range of summer and winter outdoor activities unmatched by anywhere else in the United Kingdom.
